Re-Understand, Leave Assumptions Behind and Unlearn

Most people aren’t trained to want to face the process of re-understanding a subject they already know. One must obtain not just literacy, but deep involvement and re-understanding.”

This wonderful quotation is from Charles Eames and comes compliments of Brain Pickings–a marvelously curated weekly newsletter for the insatiably curious. It reminded me of this quotation from Sebastian Thurn which I highlighted in yesterday’s post (The Future’s New Rules of the Road):

It’s sad that we never get trained to leave assumptions behind.”

These two thoughts then brought to mind this new and insightful article, Business Schools Need to Focus On Unlearning, by Erica Dhawan.

Because Dhawan states that we need to value questions over answers and because this is an idea which I try to subscribe to in in seven shorts words; I’d like to pose these three questions to you:

How do you try to re-understand your knowledge?
How do you train yourself to leave behind your assumptions?
And how do you unlearn?

    All good questions. There are three things I subscribe to doing regularly to help me unlearn in order to learn something new:
    #1 listen to others (particularly younger people) to see how they approach an issue, particularly as it relates to technology.
    #2 train and track the people that work with me and then give them get out of the way. Often they come up with a better way to get the task done and discover something none of us thought of.
    #3 continually cross my thumbs in a way that is unnatural for me – this puts me in an uncomfortable position and reminds me to take every opportunity to look at things from a different perspective.
