Jack Uldrich’s “Friday Future 5:” September 4, 2020

Think: If you were told that something in your body was pursuing a policy of unlimited growth, you might be concerned about the possibility of a cancer tumor killing you. If this is the case, why then do we never challenge the prevailing economic paradigm of our time–unlimited economic growth? Well, a growing number of economists now are and few are better–or more articulate–than Kate Raworth, the author of Doughnut Economics. Her thinking reflects a future trend all business leaders should be thinking about today. Her 2018 TED talk is a great place to start. If you’re short on time, this article offers a succinct overview: It’s Time to Abandon Economic Growth As the Only Indicator of Success.

Think Different: “Smart Cities” is definitely a trend worth watching, but what about “Dumb Cities”? Interestingly, this is a real trend and it has great merit as this article outlines: The Case for Making Low-Tech Dumb Cities.

Think Bigger:  World-wide internet access is a real possibility and it could be here sooner than most people expect. Google is now beaming wi-fi down to rural areas in Africa via balloons.

Think Smarter: Want to think smarter? This article can help: How to Make Rational Decisions in the Face of Uncertainty.

Heart-Centered Thinking: How much time do you spend thinking about the questions life is asking of you? If you’re honest with yourself the answer is probably–not enough. This short article on Viktor Frankl, The Meaning of Life Nobody Ever Told You, offers a good place to jumpstart your thinking about such weighty and important matters.

Until next week: Don’t stop thinking about the future! But also never forget “It is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than think your way into a new way of acting“!
