Today, it has been estimated that nearly 50% of all people don’t take their medication properly. This costs our healthcare system a staggering $290 billion in unnecessary emergency room visits and other avoidable healthcare costs. Luckily, big problems don’t always require big solutions and, to this end, an innovative researcher at MIT has created a “smart” pill cap that reminds users to take their medication through a series of escalating actions. Using wireless technology, it starts by glowing if the person still hasn’t taken their pill. Next, it will begin to flash and then it gets downright pushy and emits a low humming sound if the person hasn’t taken their pill. Finally, the cap ends up by tattling on you to your doctor via text message.
