The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article discussing whether companies should require women to wear panty hose. I’ll confess that I didn’t even know this was an issue, but I did find it insightful that Jim Holt, president of Mid American Credit Union, is having trouble letting go of his company’s formal policy requiring that women wear hose at all times. (Female employees at the company must wear hose when they are wearing pant suits.)
Holt argued that an informal policy might be fine for New York or San Francisco, but "we’re in the midwest." Living in the Great Plains myself I’ll admit that we’re a little more buttoned-up than folks living on the coasts, but we’re not that prudish.
Holt will reportedly loosen the dress code next week and make hose "optional." To demonstrate how difficult unlearning even something as simple as an outdated policy on panty hose can be, though, the he has let it be known in no uncertain terms that the outdated accessory is still "advised."
Personally, I say fire the hose.
