Rick Barry, professional basketball’s most accurate lifetime free-throw shooter (90 percent), shot the ball "granny" style. It is interesting to consider why no professional basketball players currently utilize a similar approach. My hunch is that most players refuse to even consider the style due to peer pressure or because they think it looks "silly."
This is only slightly ridiculous. Professional players are hyper competitive, and most employ a wide variety of tools and methods in order to give themselves the tiniest extra edge. Furthermore, a great many games are determined by just a few points. Consider the implications if "Shaq" — a 52% lifetime free-throw shooter — or Lebron James (72% free-throw accuracy) adopted Barry’s style and increased their average just a few percentage points? (Perhaps if LeBron could have "unlearned" his existing technique before the start of this season he would be playing in the NBA finals instead of Boston’s Kevin Garnett.)
