Can Unlearning Lead to Enlightenment?

Personally, I believe unlearning can lead to enlightenment but, since I am myself nowhere close to attaining this ideal, I'm for now content with achieving those smaller "aha" moments. I'm hopeful, though, that if I can string together enough such "moments" they just might lead to the promised land.  To this end, enjoy the cartoon [...]

The Answer?

I’m Being Followed by a Moon … Illusion

By sheer luck, my family and I walked up the steps of the Eiffel Tower on the evening of March 19, 2011 -- the night of the "Super Moon." The view was spectacular as a large red orb arose over the Parisian skyline. If you would have asked me whether the moon was closer to [...]

The Secret to a Long Life?

Walter Breuning, the world's oldest man, died yesterday. When asked his secrets to a long life his top response was: "Embrace change, even when the change slaps you in the face. Every change is good." Related Posts The Secret to Unlearning in Seven Words The Key to Happiness is in the Door

Rake Your Brain

After a long winter, I was finally able to get outside this past weekend and begin preparing my yard for the spring growing season. As I raked away the leaves, I thought the exercise was a fitting metaphor for what each of us should every now-and-again. When was the last time you raked your brain [...]

A Dilemma: The Problem with Problem-Solvers

Please solve this problem: Tell me if the following statement is true or false: "This statement is false." If the statement is false, then it is true. If the statement is true, then it is false. The above example is a well-known paradox but I believe one of the things society, parents, teachers, bosses and [...]

A Turn-a-Round Question

"Do you have any other questions?" It is a common question. Usually, many of us answer "no." Sometimes this is because we really don't have any other questions but, other times, it is because we don't want to display our ignorance. In my quest to unlearn, however, I have recently been turning around the question [...]

Non-Pleasure for Pleasure’s Sake

I am currently reading William Irvine's book, A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy and stumbled across this paradoxical -- or, at least, counter-intuitive -- idea: Denying yourself pleasure can lead to pleasure. How? Consider eating an ice cream cone or, perhaps, a pleasant dessert. Undoubtedly, such an experience would [...]

A Positive Spin on Negative Emotions

Have you ever considered that true happiness isn't found in the accumulation of more positive emotional experiences -- such as buying a new pair of shoes, taking a cool vacation, buying a new car, securing a better job or finding a more attractive partner -- but rather in the simple act letting go of the [...]
